In Year 1, we believe that all children, when introduced to a key new concept should have the opportunity to build competency in this topic by using the CPA approach (Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract).


Concrete - children should have the opportunity to use real objects and maths equipment to help them understand the new concept.


Pictorial - children should build on the concrete approach by using pictorial representations. 


Abstract - once the foundations are firmly laid, the children should be ready to move to an abstract approach using numbers and key concepts with confidence. 


In Year 1, we use lots of resources such as tens frames, counters, cubes, numicon, base 10, number lines and bead strings to develop the children's understanding of number.
